  1. Name the visible symptom or sign.
  2. Decide whether the pattern is likely biotic, abiotic, or still unclear.

Best answer: C. Fruiting bodies are signs because they are direct evidence of a fungus. Scorch, thinning, and early color are symptoms. They tell you the tree is responding to stress, but they do not prove the cause by themselves.

2. Chewing insect damage

A practice question describes holes in leaves, missing leaf tissue, and fresh frass on a host where the larvae are still present. Which pest category fits the evidence best?

A. Chewing insect
B. Sucking insect
C. Abiotic salt injury
D. Root disease only

Best answer: A. Chewing insects remove leaf tissue. Holes, skeletonizing, notched margins, defoliation, frass, and visible larvae all support that pattern. The question still needs severity and timing before treatment is chosen.

3. Sucking insects and honeydew

A linden has sticky residue on leaves and cars below the canopy. Black sooty mold is growing on the residue, and small soft-bodied insects are present on new shoots. What does this pattern most strongly suggest?

A. Sucking insects producing honeydew
B. Deep planting as the only cause
C. A pruning cut response
D. Normal seasonal leaf drop

Best answer: A. Aphids, scales, and some other sucking pests can produce honeydew. Sooty mold grows on that sugary residue. The best management answer would still consider pest identity, population, tree health, natural enemies, and threshold.

4. Pest presence does not prove causation

A stressed tree has a few insects on the bark, but the question also mentions drought, compacted soil, and recent trenching inside the root zone. What is the safest diagnostic response?

A. Treat the insects immediately because any insect proves the cause
B. Evaluate whether the insects are causal, secondary, incidental, or beneficial, and assess the site stressors
C. Remove the tree because all insects mean decline is irreversible
D. Ignore root-zone history once insects are visible

Best answer: B. Insects can be the main problem, a secondary stress response, or unrelated. Site history matters. Root injury, drought, compaction, and construction can explain canopy decline even when insects are present.

5. Abiotic mimic

Several unrelated species along a parking lot edge show leaf scorch after a week of heat, reflected light, and irrigation failure. No insects, frass, galleries, cankers, or fungal signs are described. Which answer is strongest?

A. A host-specific pathogen is proven
B. A site-related abiotic stress should stay high on the list
C. A borer must be attacking all species equally
D. Crown cleaning will diagnose the problem

Best answer: B. Multiple unrelated species affected at the same time usually points toward site or environmental stress. Heat, drought, reflected light, irrigation failure, salt, herbicide exposure, and root-zone disturbance can all mimic pest or disease problems.

6. Canker on a limited branch

A small branch has a localized canker and dieback beyond the affected tissue. The rest of the tree is vigorous, and no major structural defect is described. Which response is usually most reasonable?

A. Prune the affected branch properly when appropriate and reduce stress where possible
B. Top the tree to remove all possible disease
C. Apply fertilizer as the only response without checking the site
D. Remove the whole tree because every canker is fatal

Best answer: A. A limited branch canker does not automatically require whole-tree removal. Proper pruning, sanitation where appropriate, stress reduction, and monitoring are more reasonable than topping or unsupported fertilizer.

7. Root rot clue

A tree has thinning foliage, poor vigor, saturated soil history, and mushrooms near the root collar. Which detail most directly supports a root or buttress decay concern?

A. Mushrooms near the root collar
B. Leaves are present in spring
C. The client dislikes the tree
D. The tree was not fertilized last year

8. Old leaf damage

A client asks for immediate chemical control because last season's leaf-miner damage is still visible on leaves. Inspection finds no active larvae, no new injury, and good tree vigor. What is the best response?

A. Monitor and explain that old damage does not prove active infestation
B. Apply a broad insecticide because visible injury always requires treatment
C. Fertilize heavily to erase the damage
D. Remove the tree before the pest spreads

Best answer: A. Treatment should match current pest identity, activity, severity, timing, and tree condition. Old damage on a vigorous tree often calls for monitoring and client education, not automatic control.

9. Disease timing

A fungal leaf disease is favored by wet spring weather. The question asks about management after the main infection period has passed and the current damage is minor. Which answer is usually strongest?

Best answer: A. Timing matters. Some treatments only work before or during a susceptible infection period. After minor damage, monitoring, sanitation, stress reduction, and correctly timed future management may beat late chemical action.

10. Vascular wilt trap

A question describes wilting and branch dieback on one host species, but gives no lab confirmation, no clear signs, and no site history. What should you avoid?

A. Gathering more evidence before choosing a major treatment
B. Treating the first familiar wilt disease name as proven
C. Checking host, pattern, progression, and site conditions
D. Considering whether sampling is needed

Best answer: B. Wilt symptoms can come from vascular disease, drought, root injury, construction damage, soil problems, or other stress. Without enough evidence, the best answer often asks for more inspection, history, or confirmation.

11. IPM-style decision

Which answer best matches an integrated pest management approach for a confirmed pest problem?

A. Identify the pest, monitor activity, assess host health and damage threshold, consider cultural or mechanical options, and use targeted treatment only when justified

C. Picnic tables remove the need to assess structure

Best answer: A. A conk may help identify decay, but the management decision can shift into tree risk: defect, likelihood of failure, likelihood of impact, target occupancy, and consequences. Diagnosis and risk often overlap.
